DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

It is with pride and pleasure to present an overview of our educational programs, functions, and activities within the Department of Education here in our small island territory.

The responsibility of the Department of Education is totally committed to helping each and every child to reach his or her fullest potential while attending our island schools. This philosophy has always been with the department in the beginning and strikingly coincides with President Bush’s “No Child Left Behind Act”- an act focusing attention on every child.

To achieve this goal, the Department of Education is committed to the concept and practice of individualized instructions fostering each learner’s rights, needs, and aspirations. Along these lines, the department is obligated to preserve the cultural heritage of our island territory and to foster its economic growth. Inherent in this commitment is preparing individuals to become productive and contributing members of our island territory.

Our stateside educational programs are designed to meet the educational needs of our children and is taught at a level comparable to stateside curriculum. Professional development for staff and administrators alike are ongoing programs to enhance the delivery of instruction in our schools.

With the diversed ethnic background of students populating our island schools, the children of American Samoa continue to grow at an alarming rate for a small island community. The demands are now greater for more teachers, for more classrooms and school buildings, despite the tremendous progress made in these areas over the last six years or so.

However, despite these and other impediments, the dedication and preserverance of our instructional staff, administrators, and support services remain unyielding leading to many accomplishments once thought unreachable.

It is with profound pride that I extend my sincere appreciations and faafetai tele to all the hard working instructional staff, administrators, and support services for their uncompromising efforts and commend each and every one for their part to ensure the successful learning of all students in our island schools.

Sincerely,

Dr. Tuvaelagi Claire Poumele
Director of Education
